The University of Kitakyushu, in cooperation with the University of Thaksin, an educational and research partner, will conduct an educational research and development project in which university students of good standing will work together to develop products using agricultural products from the region where both universities are located. The exchange agreement between Thaksin University and the University of Kitakyushu focuses specifically on joint efforts to address the Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of the project is for students from the University of Kitakyushu and students from the University of Thaksin, who are studying regional development, to develop 'preservative-free soap' for Thai consumers using inedible palm oil, which is surplus in rural villages in southern Thailand, as a raw material, under the guidance of an established soap manufacturer in Kitakyushu City. They will also jointly develop 'health-enhancing functional food ingredients based on soybean meat,' which is attracting attention as a sustainable food, in a tie-up with a long-established meat manufacturer in Kitakyushu City. The development of these new food ingredients and additive-free soap is aimed at creating a high-value-added local industry that raises awareness of health and safety from the perspective of the SDGs, as well as environmental considerations. By combining major agricultural products from southern Thailand with the know-how of a well-established company in Kitakyushu, both parties can work together to build a new business through joint research that takes advantage of regional characteristics.

In implementing the adopted JST Sakura Science Plan, we have received generous cooperation from several medium-sized enterprises in Kitakyushu, and with this as a focal point, the two universities will work to develop practical technologies and strengthen new businesses with these companies. Since local medium-sized companies are somewhat weak in entering overseas markets and procuring overseas goods, we strongly expect to commercialize products that are attractive to consumers through the tie-up with both universities. Since consumer preferences differ somewhat between the two countries, a mixed team of Thai and Japanese students will work on prototypes to develop compositions and designs that will be well received by consumers in either country. To strengthen this level, the program will incorporate courses on business planning frameworks and marketing theory, food engineering and chemistry theory, and user research methods, as well as advanced field research and analysis of experimental results.

Through the above educational and research development projects, we hope that students from both universities will realize concrete product proposals that reflect local agricultural products and food culture on issues common to both universities and that through these activities, they will become human resources capable of working toward international mutual understanding and cooperation.
